What is Grey PageRank

After Google launched PageRank bar a couple of years ago it has become a standard for rating websites. Simply a higher PagePage means more inbounds links and thus more people finding your website useful and necessary to link to, basically more votes. And higher PR also means that a link from your website counts as a more valued vote, making a link from your website extra interesting for fellow SEO.
But, as PR because more and more important Google felt the need to ad more elements to the otherwise simply PR calculation, to keep it fair. PR today not only depends on inbound links but also on the amount of duplicate content, the quality of websites linked from a page, the amount of content, the age of a page and several other properties.
The individual effects of these properties can not always be easily observed as there are so many factors influencing PR. But, there is one way to get atleast some insight into how Google has rated your page and this is through the Grey PR bar.

What is Grey PR?
A Grey Pagerank can sometimes be observed if you have a Google toolbar installed. Whenever a page has a PR of 0 (zero) and Google accepts your page but doesn't think much of it, it will have a white bar. But, if the PR bar is grey the page Google may think something totally different of your webpage. There are several causes for a Grey PR.
1. NOT YET INDEXED:-
The most common reason for a PR bar to be greyed out is that Google just has not indexed your page yet. This can be easily checked by typing in the URL of the webpage in Google. If not results come up, you're okay and you should submit your page to Google, update your Google Sitemap or just wait for it to be indexed if you have just recently added the page to your website. If the page does show up in Google you have got a different problem and you should continue reading this article.
2. BANNED:-
Another common reason for a page to have a greyed out PR bar is when Google has decided to ban the webpage. This may be due to a page performing some Black Hat technique like, cloaking, using hidden text or keyword stuffing. But other cause like using duplicate content and linking to bad neighbourhoods have also been reported. If your page has been banned illicity or you have resolved the issue you can contact Google to have your page removed from the ban least.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT A GREY PAGERANK BAR:-
This ofcourse depends on the reason your page has been greyed out and on the purpose of the greyed out page. If your main page has a grey PR bar you have to a serious problem as most webmasters will never link to you, because linking to greyed out pages may cause your own PR to drop. In other cases it may not be possible to get rid of the grey PR. For instance, if your page is meant to collect data from Google.com you cant do anything about. make sure you are not running a PR script on your to display your websites PR, rather use an included or use the slow SEO.com PageRank Bar.
It your page is truely a supplemental result/page you try o ad content or alter the text to make it unique and renew it. If your page has been banned try to solve the issue that's causing Google to ban you and contact them.
And ofcourse in the first case just wait patiently, like with many other SEO issues.

How To Do Link Building

The real intension behind all the of the search engine optimization and link building companies is to have better website's rankings. You as the webmaster have already set up your online presence through your own domain name and internet address but after taking a look at the millions of websites listed and competing with each other on Google and other search engines, you might feel a bit confused.
You might wonder what you actually are going to do to be among the top ranking and since you have heard from another webmaster that links are that real factor behind the search engines success today, so begin your link building programs.
But do you have any idea of the number of links to be named as perfect and enough? Are you going to add the links to your website homepage based on a flashing and rushing method, creating tens and hundreds of new links per week? who are you going to ask for learning the the optimal number of links needed for your web pages?
Well, these and so many other questions might come across your mind because no one actually knows the exact answers to the questions mentioned.
So, what is the solution you might ask? In fact all of the professionals in the search engine optimization world suggest that the hurried methods will lend to some problems and failures on the web and the link building pace too is one of the steps to be taken with consideration, study and patience.
Please note that the successful websites are the ones having patient websites and owners, because the search engines in general and Google in particular is very wise when it comes to adding some links to websites and by establishing too many links in a short period of time, you might actually damage your site ranking on the web.
Please do not get yourself confused with the number of the links needed for having a top ranking site. It is not that easy to mention whether 5 to 25 links are enough to push your website among the top ten websites on Google, because if it was that easy, no listings for a long time as others would outperform it by adding more links.
But in reality you can see that many of the top ranking websites in every niche are able to remain there for along time, and some of them might be there for years, and without any fears from other colleagues and competitors getting to the top of them.
But on thing about these powerful websites is always true and that is the pace of adding the new links.
Nearly all the ranking websites have been involved in link building programs using an assured way of adding the new inbound links regularly and not too hurriedly.
Please note that search engines love to see the progress of websites achieved through a constant, regular approach and this is why Google for example never links to see thousands of instant links added to a very newly built websites overnight.
One other important point to be mentioned in this regard is that the newer a website is, the harder it is to have better search engine rankings and so the more caution it needs when it comes to add some new inbound links to it.
The older websites, especially the ones having domain names registered some years ago, having already passed some obstacles in their link building campaigns and they might be adding some new links faster and nothing happens to their rankings and this confirms the point that after several years of a website launching, gradually the website will be getting more powerful regularly.

10 Things to Avoid Mistakes in SEO

1. Focus " Buying" Phrase- as shoppers get more serious Keywords get more specific like "birthday cake Kolkata". Think of what people are searching for when they're ready to but.
2. Skip Generic Phrase- tire kickers love generic keywords. As in the example above, try to make your keyword phrases 3 words or longer.
3. Interation- try using what I call "interation" like locations. "kolkata" etc.
4. Is it a soda or pop?- there may be more than one way to say the same thing. Use Google's keyword suggestion tool to choose the most popular term and maximize your search.
5. Do a search- for each keyword you're consider ring, make sure you actually look it up in the various engines. You'll glean really helpful data from this.
6. Know your neighbours- know what kinds of results you'd be surrounded by. Ranking on some keywords can hurt your brand by association.
7. Know your competition- your search competition- who is at the top of this list for the keywords you want, how big is their site and how well optimized is their site.
8. List Length- for SEO the size of your list should depend on how much content you have to work with and how fierce your competition is. Start by looking at the keyword density of your competition as a target. For example 5% means 5 repetitions for every 100 words. You can then figure out the potential size of your list by taking the keyword density you're aiming for vs. the number of words you have available per page and the number of page on your site.
9. Products & Brands names- these can be highly valuable. If your customers know them, don't forget to optimize for them.
10. Don't Forget Misspellings- of brand names, locations names, your company names, names of prominent staff etc.

How to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking ?

How to improve your Keyword Density
1. When planning a page, think about which search terms a user is likely to use when searching for the information your site provides. For example, a visitor who is looking for information on "Search Engine Ranking" may search for things like "search engine positioning", "search engine placement", "keyword density", "top ranking", and the like.
2. After you have collected your list of keywords, do NOT simply dump those keywords into a senseless list on your web page. I have seen some websites do this in an attempt to influence search engine listings. This may not work with all search engines. Some of the processing keywords and if it sees keyword occuring to gather in a senseless sequence, it may penalise your website.
3. Instead, try to form sentences that use those keywords. If you are a good writer, you may have to kill of those good habits you previously used in writing documents; for example, may good writers have an aversion to repeating a particular word too often, choosing instead to use alternative terms that mean the something. This makes for more pleasant reading, but if will not help you get your site listed with a top rank in search engine results for that particular keyword.
For instance, if you want your page to have a high ranking when someone searches for the phrase "search engine ranking" keep repeating the phrase "search engine ranking" in your document instead of substituting with pronouns like "it" and the like. Do likewise for the other keywords that you want a high density on the page. You'll of course have to use your discretion with this, or your page will be unpleasant to read.
You can see on example of how this is done by examining this article itself, and see how often I have repeated keywords and phrase like "keyword density", " search engine ranking" and "search engine positioning".
4. In day of old, some people tried the trick of having a very short page for particular keyword. For example, the page may only have the following one sentence, "keyword density" is important in "search engine ranking". since there were so few words on the page, the page was actually easy to draft and the keywords
"keyword density" and " search engine ranking" have a very high density on that page.
This method is not very useful nowadays. For example, at the time I wrote this, it no longer appears to work with Alta Vista. Which seems to rank page that are bigger than 4k more fovourably.

Improve Your Site's Placement in Search Engines

One of the simplest way to improve your site's placement in the search engine results is to work on the keyword density on your page.
For my purpose here, I will refer to a "keyword" as a word that the user searches for when using the search engine. Generally speaking, keyword density is the ratio of the words that is being search for (the keyword) against the total number of words appearing on your web page. If your keyword occurs only once in a page of one thousand words, it has a lower keyword density than a keyword that occurs for times in a page of similar length.
If a particular keyword has a higher density on your web page then the likelihood of your page obtaining a better search engine ranking increases.Note that not all search engines bother with keyword density and indeed even those that do have their own algorithm for computing the density of a keyword. However, the principles described in this article is general enough to help your page improve its ranking in the engines that take keyword density into account.

How Search Engines Work

The first basic truth you need to learn about SEO is that search engines are not humans. While this might be obvious for everybody, the differences between how humans and search engines view web pages aren't. Unlike humans, search engines are text-driven. Although technology advances rapidly, search engines are far from intelligent creatures that can feel the beauty of a cool design or enjoy the sounds and movement in movies. Instead, search engines crawl the Web, looking at particular site items (mainly text) to get an idea what a site is about. This brief explanation is not the most precise because as we will see next, search engines perform several activities in order to deliver search results – crawling, indexing, processing, calculating relevancy, and retrieving.

First, search engines crawl the Web to see what is there. This task is performed by e piece of software, called a crawler or a spider (or Googlebot, as is the case with Google). Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they find on their way. Having in mind the number of pages on the Web (over 20 billion), it is impossible for a spider to visit a site daily just to see if a new page has appeared or if an existing page has been modified. Sometimes crawlers will not visit your site for a month or two, so during this time your SEO efforts will not be rewarded. But there is nothing you can do about it, so just keep quiet.

What you can do is to check what a crawler sees from your site. As already mentioned, crawlers are not humans and they do not see images, Flash movies, JavaScript, frames, password-protected pages and directories, so if you have tons of these on your site, you'd better run the Spider Simulator below to see if these goodies are viewable by the spider. If they are not viewable, they will not be spidered, not indexed, not processed, etc. - in a word they will be non-existent for search engines.

After a page is crawled, the next step is to index its content. The indexed page is stored in a giant database, from where it can later be retrieved. Essentially, the process of indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best describe the page and assigning the page to particular keywords. For a human it will not be possible to process such amounts of information but generally search engines deal just fine with this task. Sometimes they might not get the meaning of a page right but if you help them by optimizing it, it will be easier for them to classify your pages correctly and for you – to get higher rankings.

When a search request comes, the search engine processes it – i.e. it compares the search string in the search request with the indexed pages in the database. Since it is likely that more than one pages (practically it is millions of pages) contains the search string, the search engine starts calculating the relevancy of each of the pages in its index to the search string.

There are various algorithms to calculate relevancy. Each of these algorithms has different relative weights for common factors like keyword density, links, or metatags. That is why different search engines give different search results pages for the same search string. What is more, it is a known fact that all major search engines, like Yahoo!, Google, MSN, etc. periodically change their algorithms and if you want to keep at the top, you also need to adapt your pages to the latest changes. This is one reason (the other is your competitors) to devote permanent efforts to SEO, if you'd like to be at the top.

The last step in search engines' activity is retrieving the results. Basically, it is nothing more than simply displaying them in the browser – i.e. the endless pages of search results that are sorted from the most relevant to the least relevant sites.

Introduction of SEO

Search Engine optimization is often considered the more technical part of web marketing. This is true because SEO does help in the promotion of site and at the same time it requires some technical knowledge- at least familiarity with basic HTML. SEO is something also called SEO copyrighting because most of the techniques that are used to promote sites in search engines deal with text. Generally, SEO can be defined as the activity of optimizing web pages or whole sites in order to make them more search engine-friendly, thus getting higher positions in search engines.
One of the basic truths in SEO is that even if you do all the things that are necessary to do, this does not automatically guarantee you top ratings but if you neglect basic rule, this certainly will not go unnoticed. Also, if you set realistic goals- i.e to get into the top 30 results in Google for a particular keyword, rather than be the number one for 10 keywords in 5 search engines, you will feel happier and more satisfied with your results.
Although SEO helps to increase the traffic to one's site, SEO is not advertising. of course, you can be included in paid search results for given keywords but basically the idea behind the SEO techniques is to get to placement because your site is relevant to a particular search term, not because you pay.
SEO can be a 30-minute job or permanent activity. Sometimes it is enough to do some generic SEO in order to get high in search engines- for instance, if you are a leader for rare keywords, then you do not have a lot to do in order to get decent placement. But in most cases, if you really want to be at top, you need to pay special attention to SEO and devote significant amounts of time and effort yo it. Even if you plan to do some basic SEO, it is essential that you understand how search engines work and which items are most important SEO.
